Keeping It Real: Imagine
being born into slavery only to be taken out of your parents arms and
sold because you attempted to teach yourself to read and write. That's
what happened to John Adams Hyman, who – after being sold eight more
times for attempting to educate himself – was freed at the age of 25 by
the Thirteenth Amendment, and who 10 years later was the first African
American elected to represent North Carolina in the U.S. House of
