Thanking the Almighty Father, God, Jesus for allowing me to see another year! R.I.P. and R.I.H. Mother and Billy, you are truly missed and loved! Thanks Father for keeping my Father around another year! Thanks to my stepmother for being there and taking care of my Father!  Thanks for my 6 brothers whom are alive and doing well and thanks for my 4 sisters who are doing well too!

It has been more than a pleasure to visit/revisit/connect/reconnect with family/friends and I can honestly say without the media social sites, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, I might not even had the opportunity to reunite with many of you and for that I am ---"Truly Grateful" !!

I have enjoyed the Blessing of meeting people online that I never would have met any other way! This my end of the year shout out to the many, family members, cousins, nephews, nieces, Aunts, Uncles and many friends I have never been in the same room with but many have inspired, amused, comforted, encouraged, made me laugh, cry, holler with joy, shake my heat at and touched me in so many ways. Lesson Of The Day: No Scrubs, How To Evaluate Your New Man..

Keeping It Real: How to know if your new man has a future!

I speak to my daughters regularly about how to choose a good man.  Of course, their preferences often differ from my own, and I accept that.  When one of my girls said that she would marry Lil Wayne, I had to explain that you may not want to chase after a drug addicted man who says he wants to sleep with every girl in the world, who also gets two girls pregnant at the same time. I hope she got the point.

I sometimes write about the conversations I have with my girls, mainly because I believe that a lot of our young women make mistakes because they don’t have a father’s advice to guide them.  Right before our New Paradigm forum this year, Dr. Steve Perry and I were discussing his show, “Save My Sons,” and I told him that, in the same vein, we need to make similar efforts as black men to save our girls from all the things in the world that might seek to harm them.

Finally, I believe that every young woman deserves to have at least one older man around to protect them, who is not trying to sleep with them at the same time.  So, I use my platform as a chance to be that man for whoever is in need of good advice.  That’s why I’m writing this article.

A recent conversation I had with one of my girls led me to believe that I should share the advice with anyone who might want to listen.  It had to do with how to choose a man who is going to have a good future.  Some people are so caught up in what a person offers today that they can’t see what they will (or won’t) be able to offer in the future.  So, the popular athlete that you’re dating in college may turn out to be an uneducated, washed up, bankrupt, STD-infected clown 10 years down the road because he spent all of his earliest years throwing away all of his potential:  That’s what some of the rappers on the radio taught him to do.

So, here are a few ways for young women to know that their man will probably have a good future:

1) If you call and ask what he’s doing, does he usually appear to be doing nothing?  A man who is usually doing nothing is creating a life that has no basis.  You can’t build something on top of nothing, that defies the physics of success.  Most of us forget that what you do everyday serves as the building blocks of the life you’ll have in the future.  When I was in college studying eight straight hours on Friday nights, I was becoming a scholar.  Had I been doing something else, I would have been becoming something else.  The same way they say that you are what you eat, the fact is that you also are what you do.

2) Does he talk about his goals a lot and then back them up with action?  If you don’t have a plan to get where you’re going, then you’re probably not going to get there.  Also, talk without action is nothing but wasted breath.   Where a man is in his life doesn’t matter nearly as much as where he’s going and what he’s doing in order to get there.  Just ask Michelle Obama:  I’ll bet she nailed the first black president after a lot of other women passed him up.

3) Is he into drugs or alcohol?  Almost nothing great has ever been done by a group of people who sat around getting high and drunk all day.  Drugs and alcohol increase the chances that the person is going to do something stupid, and weed makes you lazy.  You don’t want your family to be headed by a lazy man, because a lazy man is unable to protect your children and face the challenges that life will put in front of him. I won’t even discuss how many families have been destroyed by substance abuse.

4) Does he already have a child or two that he can’t afford?  A man with baby’s mamas may bring unnecessary drama in your life.  He may also bring a slew of financial difficulties, since child support is expensive.  It’s hard enough to be the instant step mom that his kids resent, let alone knowing that you’ll always be trying to play catch up financially.  I’m not saying that a woman shouldn’t date a man with children (I had a child when I was 18), but if the load is already too heavy for him, it might be indicative of an even heavier future.  Most brothers I know with a stack of baby’s mamas are flat broke and dodging the police on a daily basis. It’s very sad to watch.

5) Is he getting an education and working hard to be a good student?  Every person should get some kind of education or training to allow him to compete in the world.  I also advocate for all black men to learn to be self-employed, since white folks just aren’t giving us the same jobs they are giving to each other.   But being in school isn’t enough; he should also be a serious student.  A man going to school and studying hard is likely going to possess values that are consistent with hard work and education, which are going to be the values that you want to pass on to your children.

Remember ladies:  Every date is a potential mate.  So, before you give that man your phone number and let him enter into your body, make sure that he has proven himself worthy:  Scrubs need not apply.  At the same time, you must also work to step up your own game so that when the right man comes along, you are able to identify him and also add value to his life.  Good men don’t want scrubby women either.  Productive love must be reciprocal. Ya Dig?...

Lesson Of The Day: Chocolate Chip Pudding Cookies...

Keeping It Real: Makes 6 dozen..

2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour, I used freshly ground hard white wheat *
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 cups butter, softened
1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup white sugar
2 (3.4 oz) packages instant vanilla pudding
4 eggs, room temp
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
4 cups semi sweet chocolate chips
* Feel free to substitute All Purpose flour for the whole wheat flour amount if you would like. It works just as well as the whole wheat version.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk together flours and baking soda and set aside. In a large bowl or kitchenaid mixer, cream butter and sugars. Add in the pudding mix and beat until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat until smooth. Slowly add in the flour mixture, making sure that it is well incorporated. Last, add the chocolate chips and stir well to mix them throughout the dough.

I use my medium scoop to make the cookies an even size. I like to bake up about half of the batch and then freeze the remaining dough. When I am ready to use it, I simply set it on the counter for 20-30 minutes and then scoop out the number of cookies that I want to bake at the time.

I bake these on a silpat mat for 11 minutes. Let them cool on the sheet for 5 minutes and then remove to wire racks. The cookies freeze beautifully, as does the cookie dough. For the record, both the cookies and the dough taste awesome straight out of the freezer. Yes, I did just admit that. Enjoy!

Lesson Of The Day: Not Of Christ....

Keeping It Real: Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,  I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:12-14).

We all have a story to tell - some chose to share their story to strengthen or encourage another Sister but some chose not to.  This is because of various reason but most likely because we have not become comfortable with our story, or maybe it still is painful. Whatever the reason - there is a story!

There is nothing nice about my story, I lived in the flesh most of my young 20's and 30's.  I did what I wanted to do and I took no prisoners.  I didn't realize that I was actually a prisoner of sin - I had become so used to that life that my life in Christ was pretty much buried so deep inside of me that you would need a road map to find it.  Nothing I am proud of but unfortunately it is the ugly truth.

Paul had a similar story, a life of flesh and not of Christ.  He told his story while in prison in Rome.  Paul told his story to encourage those heavy heart to let them know that we all fall short of the glory of God, but God is so forgiving that you must never loss sight of Him.  When we allow our circumstances define us, we lose sight of God.  Never allow your yesterday to define your tomorrow.  "forgetting those things that are being and reaching forward" - this should be our goal.

But let me remind you that you should never forgetting that path crossed to get where you are -  but not allowing those path stones to block you from where you are going. "I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus". Paul discover this and he wrote his story to allow other to know just how merciful and forgiving God is.  We may all stubble, we may even fall down, but we must never loss focus.  We must learn that our story is also our strength in Christ.

The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him ( Psalm 28:1). Ya Dig?....

I know we all want the best for our children but she is doing too much! Kandi needs to get her Mother in order as her friend stated and I truly hope her friend isn't messing with her man! Lesson Of The Day: Come To Jesus....

Keeping It Real: Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them out of their distresses.  He brought them out of darkness and shadow of death, and broke their chains in pieces.  Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men (Psalm 107:13-15).

Oh how blessed we are!  We may not have everything we want but despite all my wants, I do have all that I need.  Praise Him.  Often times we think we are not successful because we judge ourselves on what others have - but in Christ we are complete!  Stop looking at others and look to Christ. In Christ you are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37).

A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.  For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of (Luke 6:45).

We need to be very careful of what we speak over our lives and the lives of others.  Sticks and stones may break my bones but word will never hurt me - not true.  Words are very hurtful and some last a life time.  But they don't have to.  Christ came to give us life - He broke the chains of our distress.  Stop stressing and give it all to Christ.  He is our LORD and He broke those chains --- leave those broken peaces on the ground and walk to freedom in Christ. Lesson Of The Day: Caramel White Velvet Butter Cake...

Keeping It Real:

4 oz egg whites--room temperature
1 cup whole milk--divided--room temperature
2 1/4 tsp vanilla
3 cups sifted cake flour
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 Tbs + 1 tsp baking powder
12 Tbs unsalted butter-room temperature
1/4 tsp kosher salt

In a mixer combine all the dry ingredients, and mix for about 30 seconds. Add the butter and mix until the flour gets crumbly. Stir in 1/4 cup of the milk and bring the speed to medium high and beat for about 30 seconds.  In a bowl, stir together the egg whites, milk and vanilla.  Add to the dry ingredients in 3 additions, scraping down the sides and beating for about 5-10 seconds after each addition. Do not over mix, but make sure it is all incorporated.  Pour into 2-7" cake tins, which you have parchment lined and greased.   smooth the batter and bake in a preheated 350 oven for approximately 35 minutes.  Bake until a tester comes out clean.
Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn over onto cooling rack and allow to cool completely.  Slice each round into two horizontally to make 4 layers total.

Caramel Icing
2 cups light brown sugar
1 stick unsalted butter
1/3 cup whole milk
2 Tbs real maple syrup
1/4 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 cups confectioner's sugar
1 cup chopped toasted pecans

Bring brown sugar, butter, milk, maple syrup and salt to a simmer.  Simmer just until the sugar is no longer grainy, don't let it boil.  Remove from heat and add vanilla, stirring constantly.  Allow to cool just slightly...so that it isn't scorching hot, but nicely warm.  Whisk in powdered sugar.  You have to work fast, this will set up rather quickly.  Pour icing on each layer as you stack it, you don't want it to completely pour over the sides, but it can drip over without issue.  once all the layers are set, pour the remaining icing over the top using a ladle.  use the bottom of the ladle to coax the icing over the sides to cover completely.
sprinkle pecans on top! Ya Dig?...

Lesson Of The Day: Upside Down Pineapple Cupcakes....

Keeping It Real:

1 box Pillsbury Moist Supreme Classic Yellow Cake Mix with pudding in the mix
1 (3.4 ounce) Vanilla Instant Pudding
3 eggs
1/3 cup oil
2/3 cup pineapple juice
1/3 cup milk
1 (8 ounce) can pineapple slices, drained (save juice)
1 (8 ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained (save juice)

Topping
1 stick butter, melted
1 cup brown sugar
maraschino cherries

Spray muffin tins well with cooking spray.  Melt butter and sugar together on top of the stove. Add 1 tablespoon sugar mixture to each muffin cup. Next, put in 1 tablespoon crushed, drained pineapple or 1 pineapple slice in bottom of each cup. In a large bowl mix cake mix, pudding mix, eggs, oil, juice and milk with mixer.  Fill cups 1/2 to 3/4 full with cake mix.  Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 25 minutes. Remove and let cool at least 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges to loosen muffins from cups before removing.  Turn cupcakes upside down on a platter and add cherries.  Note:  I used one regular 12 cup muffin tin and one large 6 cup tin to make these.  This way the recipe made 18 cupcakes.. If just using regular 12 cup tins, it should make about 24 cupcakes. You could use all crushed pineapple or all pineapple rings as well. I wanted to try them both ways to see how they turned out. I think the pineapple rings work better in the larger cup muffin tins.) These would be good topped with whipped cream and you could add nuts to the mix.  Ya Dig?...

I believe Lord, that all trials of life are under Your care and that all things work for the good of those who love You. Take away from me fear, anxiety, anger, hurt, hatred and distress. Help me to face and endure my difficulties with faith, courage and wisdom. Grant that this trial may bring me closer to You for You are my rock and refuge, my comfort and hope, my delight and joy. I trust in Your love and compassion. Blessed is Your name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. Ya Dig?..

Lesson Of The Day: I Get The Last Laugh....

Keeping It Real: The people that HURT you , BETRAYED you or CRUSHED you are the same ones whom later on, wished they had APPRECIATED YOU. DON'T be spiteful, get revenge or cave their face in. They are the reason you are better today. They made you stronger. wiser and happier. Because of their mistakes another is reaping the rewards. Forgive those who've done you wrong and thank them for making a better you today. While they are snickering, laughing and doing you wrong behind your back, God keeps on Blessing you in their face! Lesson Of The Day: He Who Is Without Sin....

So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first" (John 8:7).

Sin - something we are all to familiar with.  No it is not anything we should be proud of or boast about, yet we all fall short of His glory and are guilty of sin (Romans 3:23).

In this verse, there was a woman found guilty of adultery which was then punishable by stoning her to death.  What a horrible way to die.  If we all had to stand before God this day, and answer for what we have done to others whether it be by action, word, and/or thoughts, where would we stand?    I raise this question because lately I have heard over and over again that Church Folks can be some of the most critical people you will find.

I don't know about you, but I surely do not accept that label and we need to change that mind set!  I am not going to stand here and say that I have not been guilty of some shape or form of this, but I am praying that myself and others take responsibility and start acting in a more Christian manner.  Jesus Christ himself stood before this crowd and guarded this woman from her punishment.

He stand before you, He stands before I, and He is standing before each and everyone around us guarding us from the punishment we rightfully deserve.

So please,  my Sisters, my Brothers lets start acting like our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! He came to give us life - it is your Christian responsibility to bring folks to Christ and not throw stones.

Have a blessed and glorious day. Ya Dig?...

Lesson Of The Day: Cayenne Pepper Therapy...

Keeping It Real: On a FULL stomach only,  mix 1/8-1 tsp of cayenne pepper in 1/2 cup cold fruit juice and chug it. Follow with a slice of bread to push it all down and drink as much water as you want..1-3 times daily....it's not as spicy on the stomach as you think; the more pepper the better but start off slow if you're not used to hot stuff...it does thin the blood so be careful and start at the lowest dose if you are on blood thinners or high blood pressure meds...some people prefer to put the cayenne in warm water and drink as a tea so its up to you but to me the cold cuts the burn the best...if you have external pain you can also mix some cayenne into lotion and use it on top of the skin...wash your hands A LOT so you don't get it in your eyes!!! I hope this helps!! I've known many who have cured chronic pain with this and even migraines!! Ya Dig?...

Lesson Of The Day: God & Circumstances...

Keeping It Real: Sometimes circumstances in life distract us from God. We focus on what’s around us instead of who’s in us, and who’s for us. We look at what we lack instead of Whom we have. Sometimes when reading about the unbelief of the Israelis in scripture, I shake my head at their doubt. But I realize I’m the same way. I complain. I whine. I think God lost track of me.

But just when I get tired — not physically tired, but mentally tired, emotionally tired, and spiritually tired — God does something. He doesn’t intervene in a huge, miraculous, sea-splitting, water-walking, five-loaves-multiplying kind of way. But He’ll encourage me with subtle words and actions. He’ll remind me, in unique ways, He’s here, He knows what’s going on, and He’s in control.

God knows how to push our buttons — in good ways. He knows what will bring us peace, individually and specifically. I can be mired in simple stint of loneliness, yet the God who controls the universe, watches over the billions of residents of Earth, and reigns over the creatures of Heaven, finds it vital to remind me I’m not alone. He’ll use phone calls, texts, Facebook messages from friends to reveal the loving fellowship in my life. It reminds me of a quote from author Mark Batterson:

“God is great not just because nothing is too big for Him; God is also great because nothing is too small.”

So, if you’re like me, and you’ve been distracted by the issues of life lately. Or, if you’ve grown tired within, stop tripping. He’s come through for you before, He’ll come through again. He’s never left your side, even if it feels that way.

Encouragement is on its way. Relief is on its way. As the rest of the scripture in Isaiah 40 says, “Those who wait upon God get fresh strength.” Ya Dig?..
